Social Justice VS. Entertainment.

It’s a shame that it seems like Americans can’t focus on two things at once. Something I’ve been doing for my almost 29 years of living here on this planet and in this country. That’s why the inability to focus on important social issues and entertainment is frustratingly foreign to me. I’m either smarter than the average American, surrounded by dumbasses, an alien or there’s something wrong with me. I know some folks out there would love to hear me say that I’m wrong. Wrong for being able to understand the severity of societal issues that plague me like systematic racism and other issues that harm others, and also have the mental capacity to indulge in what entertains me. I’m not. I’m not going to admit wrong doing, doing something that feels both natural and moral. Standing up against justice and being entertained on the side is historically doable and giving up one for the other isn’t a choice one has to make. I might be wrong about Kyrie’s level of dedication to keeping the world woke about racism, but I won’t say I’m wrong for being someone who can do both.

if people can’t focus on a past time AND important societal issues, that’s their dumbass fault!

Americans in general are some of the most “least educated” people in the world. That’s still no excuse for us not to be better in all facets of life. Do we take away American’s right to vote because you had dumbasses writing in “Hennessy” and “Harambe” for President in 2016, or do we tell those morons to do better and take life seriously? You know what we did and the same approach should be taken when it comes to other important issues being toyed with by American idiots. I understand the concerns, greatly. I too want the news coverage to be all about the Black Lives Matter protest and other movements brining MORE awareness to injustices happening to black folks here in America. I also want basketball back. Me saying that does not mean I value sports over black lives. It does not mean I think my personal joys are more important than the fight for justice and the right to live. It simply just means that I would like to watch the sport I’ve loved watching since I was a kid. None of that matters at a time like this and I know that. My problem is not whether the NBA/WNBA should make a return during this time, but the coddling of careless beings who don’t understand the importance of life outside of sports/entertainment. Those folks aren’t being told to wise up, to wake up. If I can enjoy sports, movies, music, TV shows, video games AND still know “what time it is” there’s no reason why Americans, much older than I am aren’t being held to the same standard.

If you’re worried about sports deflecting from the fight against injustice, you’re either someone who can’t focus on two things at once or you’re someone who allows the media to control your mind. The media tells you what is important, what you should believe in and that’s a problem you’ll continue to have whether the NBA makes a return or not. If you’re reading this, you’re likely an adult. An adult who made the choice to read this. A decision I am grateful you made, by the way. With that being said, use the same method(s) you used when deciding on reading this piece to decide what issues are more important to you. Use that same method(s) to decide how you should feel about things.

Media coverage isn’t the problem. It is people relying on the media to think for them. There’s a reason why television’s nickname is “Idiot Box.” People have the power to think for themselves and we have the power to create the media and control the media. If the media isn’t covering what we truly believe should be covered, continue holding the media accountable. Most importantly, the same is said about people. Bringing back basketball or any other sporting/entertainment event is not the problem outside of rona scares. These things share just as much responsibility as Presidential candidates Hennessy and Harambe did in the 2016. Hold the people, the very stupid people accountable for whatever goofiness goes on in their brain. Especially those who only care about black entertainers for what they do for them and not because those black entertainers are black lives.
