Kelli’s Baby Fever.

Molly has her own story. Tiffany has her own “situation” going on, Issa is a given, it’s her show. But what about Kelli? Kelli has been a beloved character by many viewers of HBO’s hit series Insecure. I’ve listened to a lot of voices, big and small, avid fans and casuals. One of the most common takes everyone has is about Kelli, their love for her and how they want to see more from her. Now I’ve heard some pretty horrible takes about Insecure, that one isn’t one of them. The show writers aren’t doing Kelli any justice as of yet, so I’ve created my own little fan fiction story arch for Kelli.

She’s More Than Her Weight.

Whether folks want to admit it or not, the show has Kelli playing the “fat and funny friend” to three grown ass childish women, and when their childish ways get them a beating from reality, they all come looking for Kelli’s bosom to lay their head on and cry into. Obviously I’m not arguing things should be this way, I wouldn’t be writing this piece if I was okay with that, but just because I’m not okay with it being true doesn’t mean I will ignore what I’ve seen for the last 4 seasons and act like the ugly truth about a good show is not there. Show writers rely on and bring in Kelli for the “comedy relief” during emotional/serious moments and I’m not saying that they should stop doing that. Kelli is a trip, and that’s what got us to love her, but for people like myself who are very into character development and the overall totality of a man or woman, Krazy Kelli just isn’t enough.

Momma Kelli.

Kelli’s got feelings, too. She’s not horny all the time. When she’s not creating persona’s to pick up men, or not speaking candidly about her sex life, or going off on white people and the police, or helping, hyping ir clowning a friend, or taking care of Tiffany’s baby, she’s talking about how much she wants to be a mother or mentioning motherhood.

Once is a coincidence. Two times? Maybe. 3 times? That’s baby (fever). I took note of all the examples of Kelli’s baby fever. It all started in episode 6 of the 3rd season of Insecure. Tiff reveals to Issa, Molly and Kelli that she did not include them in her baby shower planning group because none of them are mothers. Kelli was the only one who took it personally. “Because I don’t have a baby, I can’t do that for you?” Prior to her asking that question she made it clear to Tiffany that she wanted to be part of the planning committee for the baby shower. The “Crazy Crew” is what I believe Tiffany calls the other group of friends who happen to be mothers as well. I knew there was more to Kelli before this moment, but her going off on Tiffany at her baby shower was a standout moment for her because it showed a side of her that I don’t even think her friends witness often. It not only forced the viewers to pay close attention to that scene, but her friends to actually listen to her and take her seriously, even if it were just for that moment. That’s when I knew Kelli wanted more in life than to just be the funny, peace making, hell raising friend. I truly believe Kelli was more hurt that her not being a mother had disqualified her from being a part of the “Crazy Crew,” and part of that hurt stems from Tiffany, her close friend being the one to to dish out that pain. Kelli and the Krazy Krew does have a nice ring to it, but a group of black women using the initials “KKK” just doesn’t sit right with me. Sure, the name would still ring being spelled “Kelli and the Crazy Crew” but we both know Kelli was not going to last a week playing nice with them boujee women.

This next quote might sound contradictory to this piece and to the other statements kelli has made, but bare with me and you’ll understand why I think this is more proof of Kelli wanting to be a mother. In episode 8 of season 3 Kelli says “If I wanted to a kid, I would’ve kept the last one.” It’s common knowledge that Kelli says a lot of crazy things. Have you ever said some dark shit that was wrapped in humor so you can keep yourself from crying in front of everyone and not make the mood awkward? Do you have friends who often make dark humorous jokes for the same reason? That, my friends is exactly what Kelli was doing in that moment. As well as fronting like the child she once had meant nothing to her. She either had a child and aborted it or she gave it up for adoption. We’re 4 seasons in and we still don’t know much about the lady known as Kelli other than her job and her sex life and she once ran a marathon. A statement like that can be misread as a serious comment, no doubt, but it can also be misread as “just a meaningless joke.” Kelli’s “motherless” comments came right after it was revealed that she was the God Mother of Tiffany and Derrick’s baby. A role that I think Kelli is fine with for the time being, but still has aspirations for more.

Before the season 4 primiere of Insecure, one of the scenes that was showed during the season 3 recap was the scene outside of Tiffany’s baby shower. The scene that I bring up as my first quote and proof of Kelli wanting to be a mother. You might say “well it was a part of season 3 and it was during the recap of season 3, so it makes sense to have that scene showed.” You’d be right if every moment from season 3 was showed in that recap, which would’ve ruined the purpose of the recap. Recaps usually only show events from previous seasons that are related to events that will occur during the current season of any series. Kelli being upset that she didn’t qualify to be a planner because wasn’t a mother was not touched upon in season 4 of Insecure. Instead we got Tiffany’s postpartum moments leading up to the actual showing of it during the season finale. Although I credit my genius for coming up with this character arch for Kelli, I do not think that I am the only one who believes that would be a nice development. I have a feeling that the writers want that for Kelli as well, but felt the postpartum angle that they took in season 4 was the more important (and easier) story to tell and tie up. With Kelli, they’re going to have to crack open more eggs than they’ve originally planned in order to give her the seed that she wants.

Ernest Thoughts.

I have no confirmation of anything. I’m just a nigga with a brain who is very good at making predictions. With that being said, if what I’m about to say comes true to life, DO NOT accuse me of spoiling the show for you AND I need you to give me my credit.

Season 5 will also have 10 episodes, maybe 11. A lot will be packed into those 10 or 11 episodes because season 5 will be the last season of Insecure. Kelli will get her kid. Whether she adopts a Chinese baby or uses a turkey baster to get herself pregnant, she’s going to be a mother. That won’t get as much attention as Issa, Lawrence and Molly would, but don’t be surprised if the final episode Kelli gets her moment like Tiffany got hers. Difference being you have one woman welcoming motherhood and the other tried to escape it for a day. Why a Chinese baby? The baby is either going to be Chinese/Asian or white. She (Kelli) is going to make her jokes about raising the baby black and it’s going to be this big “kiki” black mother raising a non-black baby, moment. If I’m wrong, highlight this prediction and laugh at me. If I’m not, run me my Virgils $MoneyForErnest
