With all the talks about something Kanye said, I want to focus on the comments he made about Lizzo’s weight.

Funny how the promotion of unhealthy living is now a “concern” of some folks in and out the industry, so let’s talk about it. Let’s talk about the thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of songs that promote or reference drug and alcohol abuse. Where were the cries about the promotion of unhealthy living from mainstream artist and their fans? Even your lord and savior, Yeezus West has made drug abuse a lighthearted issue on the song “Everybody Nose.” A song about girls partying with coke, and I’m not talking about Coca Cola. This is not a song down talking “party favors,” it’s a song promoting them and paints an image of a fast/wreckles decision making. Not once did Kanye say to himself or others involved that what they were doing was promoting unhealthy lifestyles. Then there’s the obvious “promotion” of unsafe promiscuity, physical and mental abuse and violence in all music, not just music made by Kanye West and one specific genre. With all that being said, I still think “unhealthy” music should exist because it is art, freedom of speech and expression. My argument in this piece is not about music. It’s about the comments Kanye made about Lizo and the music fans who all of the sudden claim to care about healthy living of the promotion of “unhealthy” living. For starters, to my understanding Lizzo’s musical content is usually “heart break” music or “self-esteem music.” Not a Lizzo connoisseurs, but I’ve yet to hear a song from her that promoted excessive unhealthy diets, so where are the claims of her being used to prop up unhealthy living coming from? Rhetorical question, I know where it is coming from. Fat hatred is a real thing. What haters see when they see Lizzo is a big black woman who defy’s all of their stereotypes. She’s beautiful, confident and successful and that alone shakes up their already tainted view of the world. Fat women aren’t supposed to be adored. Fat black women aren’t supposed to be happy and adored. Instead of admitting their toxicity they’d rather hide behind the cloak of “pro-health.” My personal thoughts on Lizzo’s weight is that I love it, but I’m a “heathen.” I know all too well the dangers of being overweight. I’ve seen first hand what problems that can cause somebody, but I think those are individual problems. All we can and should do as a society is to love one another and GENUINELY AND RESPECTFULLY educate people on the risk of being overweight. Ultimately it is up to the individual to live the life they want to live.
