HBCU “Personality” Types, Where’Yat?

The flava, the sheer natural talent, the melanin and most importantly the rich history all add to the allure of historically Black colleges and universities. There’s a lot to be proud of if you’re an HBCU alumni an there are many reasons to admire HBCU’s and life as an HBCU student if you aspire to be that, but none of that pride and inspiration should ever buy your silence when one of “our” higher learning institutions start having low vibrational moments. What’s going on at Howard University right now is one of those “low vibe” HBU moments that a lot of HBCU connoisseurs are very quiet about, despite all this “love” for HBCU’s and its students. How do you love someone and look the other way when they are screaming for help? How do you praise an entity but not critique them when they are doing something un-praise worthy?

Howard Needs Help.

For about two week’s now since I wrote and published this piece Howard University students have staged a sit-in protest at the Blackburn University Center. Protesters are demanding that dorm conditions be improved, transparency from admins and more presentation on the board of trustees. This protest looks to be going s strong as it has been for a long time until their demands are met. My type of protesters. Paying students are sleeping in tents on the streets on and around campus. You upset yet? No? too distracted by the loud drums, horns, and grown men bouncing around barking? It’s lit and that’s it, huh? Unfortunately for you and most unfortunately for Howard University students that’s all there is when it comes to life as a Harvard University student living on campus. What I’d like to see is more HBCU alums and lovers step forward and also be the voices demanding better from Howard University. I’d still be writing this piece if things were different, but I find it extremely despicable when I see people that I know and love who graduated from a HBCU only talk about homecoming or whenever a celebrity who didn’t even graduate high school decides to “rep” one of the historically black colleges/universities to add on to their pro-Black cosplay wardrobe. As much as I admire HBCU’s I still think i is annoying when alumni and other admirers gawk about their HBCU or HBCU’s in general and take it on as if their entire persona is warped around that specific institution or all HBCU’s. These people don’t seem to understand the best way to show solidarity and love for your brothers and sisters is to use your influence to aid them in their struggles instead of only giving a damn about them when they sing, dance, step or perform.
