This may come as a surprise to you, but white people love me. Who would’ve thought? Not all of them want to silence me. in fact, the ones I’m referring to in this piece want me to speak up more, just not about race.

This shit never fails. I express my thoughts on another avenue whether it’d be through text or verbally speaking on a topic outside of race and people of all backgrounds tend to enjoy the message. Without provocation, after a nice lengthy conversation with them they ruin the vibe by saying “see, it’s not about race. I’m white, you’re black and we’re getting along.” It’s always white people who say that or something to that effect, hardly never or very rarely is it a non-white person who feels the need to deny racism exist by pointing out our exterior differences.

No fucking shit you’re white. I can see that. I can also that we are getting along as well, but comments like that make me think I’m not a person, just an experience to you. That you can go back and tell your predominantly white peers that you’ve had a lengthy conversation with a black person today and you didn’t feel guilty for being white. That same can be said about a white person who doesn’t have many friends and keeps to themself a lot. You’re actually dismissing me and other black folks when you unwillingly acknowledge our differences. To be a true friend of somebody, you must accept them for who are they are, fully. If you can’t do that, you don’t have to be their friends. There’s no law that says white people must have at least one black friend. That’s y’alls insecurity and guilt making you look goofy, again. No, not every conversation has to bee about race (only when it is important) but simply having the attitude that race doesn’t matter because we’re both bonding over a bike ride is how you lose me.

Get your guilt in check.
