A Healthy Dose of Narcissism is How Stories Are Made.
“Thinking that someone would be interested in a story that you thought up in your brain is kind of narcissistic to begin with” -Chris Gore.
Chris Gore also has another interview with Film Courage saying that he’d “Thanos snap” every remake made post 1992.
For those wondering, Chris Gore is an independent screen writer. I’m not too familiar with his work, but I do find myself tuning in and getting some good commentary from him whenever he’s interviewed on Film Courage, but like a lot of people who’ve “made it,” there’s contradictions that should be pointed out in their speeches. I’m not here to pick at Gore himself, just the interesting point of view that is quoted above.
A Narcissists Thought’s.
I don’t necessarily disagree with my stranger writer friend, Chris Gore. I don’t find myself disagreeing with him on much of what I’ve seen of him, but never have I seen an interview where I agreed with him 100% of the way either. This is partly why I generally enjoy his Film Courage interviews. My point is simple, that “healthy dose” of narcissism that us creative writers have that tells us our thoughts are good enough to be made into a book, movie, tv show, screenplay ect. is what’s creating the brand new stories Hollywood is in desperate need of and I know Chris Gore would agree. I just want other creative writers to know that those ideas that they think are brilliant enough to be put out in the world should be put out. For starters, the story is original, above all else, which means it’s not a remake. That is something to be proud of, these days especially. Second, and last point, for Chris Gore to say that people are essentially creating stories that nobody asked for is a stretch. People ask for original stories all the time. What creative writers need to understand is just because we wouldn’t write it, read it or watch it doesn’t mean that story shouldn’t have been told and it was created by a narcissistic person who only thinks about what they are into. But hey, none of the stories that I’ve come up with would exist without a hit of not clinically diagnosed narcissism.
